FONDECYT Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Observational/Theoretical
Extragalactic Astronomy at Universidad de Valparaiso, Chile.
The "Instituto de Fisica y Astronommia" (IFA; http://www.dfa.uv.cl) of
the "Universidad de Valparaiso" (UV), Chile, invites applications for
a postoctoral research fellowship in observational/theoretical
extragalactic astrophysics. The selected applicant will be sponsored
by our new IFA-UV faculty professor Dr. Edo Ibar
(http://edoibar.wix.com/home) in applications for 3-year postdoctoral
grants from the Chilean funding agency FONDECYT. Funding is restricted
to applicants with awarded PhDs no more than 3 years ago in
astronomy/astrophysics. The IFA-UV provides a friendly and productive
working environment at one of the most vibrant Chilean cities,
Valparaiso, declared world heritage site by UNESCO. Our fast growing
institute is composed by 17 professors (11 astronomers and 6
physicists), 10 postdoctoral researchers, and >10 graduate
students. While working at IFA-UV, the candidate will qualify as a
member of the Chilean community with 10% privileged access on all
telescopes in Chile, including ALMA, ESO/Paranal's 4x8m VLT and 4m
VISTA, La Silla's 3.5m NTT and 3.6m and 2.2m telescopes, Gemini-South
8m, Carnegie's 2.5m and Magellan 2x6.5m, CTIO's 4m (Blanco), SOAR 4m,
as well as ASTE, and APEX. Applicants should submit via email and in
pdf format a cover letter, CV with exact awarded PhD date, publication
list, and a potential research plan (three pages) describing projects
to be carried out at IFA-UV, to Dr. Edo Ibar (eduardo.ibar@uv.cl) by
April 20, 2014. In addition, applicants should arrange for 3 letters
of recommendation to be sent by the deadline directly to the email
address above.

ESO-Chile Postdoctoral position in gravitationally lensed sub-mm
galaxies at Universidad de Valparaiso, Valparaiso, Chile.
The "Instituto de Fisica y Astronomia" (IFA; http://www.dfa.uv.cl) of
the "Universidad de Valparaiso" (UV), invites applications for a 1
year postdoctoral research fellowship. The selected candidate will
work with Prof. Veronica Motta on studies of sub-mm-selected strong
gravitational lenses. This project is aimed to reinforce theoretical
modelling exploiting the synergy between high-resolution ALMA/SMA and
VLBI observations. The position will be in close collaboration with
Dr. Edo Ibar, who recently arrived to the Institute and is specialist
in multi-wavelength studies of high-z galaxies. The applicant should
have a PhD in astronomy/astrophysics. We seek candidates with interest
in gravitational lens modelling (in the u-v and image plane) and
radio/sub-mm interferometric data processing. Broader applicant
profiles will be consider. The applicant is encouraged to develop
his/her own research making use of the telescope facilities in Chilean
territory. The fellow will be eligible for the 10% privileged access
on all telescopes in Chile, including ALMA, ESO/Paranal's 4x8m VLT and
4m VISTA, La Silla's 3.5m NTT and 3.6m and 2.2m telescopes,
Gemini-South 8m, Carnegie's 2.5m and Magellan 2x6.5m, CTIO's 4m
(Blanco), SOAR 4m, as well as ASTE, and APEX. Interested researchers
should send a CV (including publication list) and description of
research interests (max of 3 pages) to Dr. Edo Ibar
<eduardo.ibar@uv.cl>. Applicants should also request 2 letters of
recommendation to be sent directly from the writers. Closing date for
receipt of applications is 20-April-2014. Late applications may be
considered until the position is filled.
